Yes, We Can...Act Up!!!

- Cathy Maughan, CEP Local 7 Vice-President

This year two CEP sisters from Local 7 had the opportunity to attend the CEP National Women's Conference in Ottawa from October 21 to 23. The conference was held at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. This year's theme was "Yes, We Can...Act Up!!!".

The conference was opened by a very talented Native Drummer, Elaine Kicknosway along with her young son. A panel discussion with Cheri Di Nova, NDP MP for Ontario and Dr. Francine Burnonville, Socialist and union advisor for the Council of the Montreal Metropolitan area was held on Monday. Both presenters spoke of their involvement with the feminist movement and their contributions to their communities. What was very interesting to learn was that Cheri Di Nova, an NDP leader had led the fight for a $10 minimum wage and forced the government to act.

During the conference we formed into groups where we could learn through discussions the different work issues facing sisters today and discuss how our locals differ from one another. On Sunday evening we attended a dinner and were entertained by the Dandelion Dance Company, an Ottawa based youth dance group.

Other guest speakers were Sue Genge, Canadian Labour Congress, Andree Cote, National Association of Women and the Law and Candace Lavalley, President of Local 7-O, Thunder Bay. Lastly, Hilda Ramirez, an organizer and trainer who has worked for more then 15 years with the Authentic Labour Front in Mexico.

Peggy Nash, our last speaker, is an elected MP and she spoke of her involvement in various projects to end violence against women and more support for homeless youth in Canada. She has also helped ensure refugees gain safe access to Canada.

On behalf of Barbara Jones and myself, I would like to thank CEP for giving us this opportunity to attend the 2007 National Women's Conference.
